Are You Tired Of Producing Ineffective Results?
Are you frustrated that your attempts at innovation don’t make a difference?
Do you apply creativity in areas that don’t yield results?
Then apply it in one of the areas that makes the most difference - your business model.
We’ve talked about Doblin’s market research in the area of innovation effectiveness. Now here’s an interview with IBM’s Patrick Medley that yielded similar results.
Q: What came out of those detailed interviews?
A: Through that we identified a number of interesting facts.
Number one: business model innovation is to some extent about survival in long-term business. To survive, you need to be thinking about how you’re going to innovate your business model. Just changing your processes, just changing your products and services—that could just mean you’re going to struggle to survive in the long term.
There’s evidence to suggest this once you know where to look. For instance, just look at this simple statistic: 84 percent of the companies that were in the S&P 500 five decades ago, are no longer in it. Then look at which companies are still there and which aren’t, and compare what businesses they were in 50 years ago to what they’re in now. That’s a fairly critical indicator of why you have got to look at some pretty fundamental changes in terms of how your business operates moving forward.
Doblin believes that business model should be the number one target for your innovation efforts and IBM agrees. I don’t know what you consider critical mass for market acceptance but this position is pretty close to reaching it.
Further, IBM divides business model into three areas that Doblin has already considered separately: business model, branding, and core processes. This is even more of an overlap, and adds credibility to Doblin’s original position.
Use this knowledge to focus your strategic thinking. Apply creativity in areas like this and you’ll be more effective.
